Hospital Bag Checklist

August 17, 2018 No Comments

No matter how many times I’ve done this, I still find myself looking up what I need to bring to the hospital. I sent messages to all my friends asking what they brought over and over again. With Birdie, I had my bag packed, but A panicked and forgot it at home. He had to go back and get it the next day. With Tot, I didn’t have a bag. I kept procrastinating and even though he was SO late (42 weeks), I just never had one. My sister ended up packing a bag for me, and she packed it with the good stuff. I’ve packed and unpacked my hospital bag for Dumpling so many times.

I was told that I might have to get induced because of Cholestasis, so I packed my bag. Then they decided against it, so I ended up back home and taking some stuff out. So it’s been repacked a few times. My doctor always tells me to have my bag with me when I go in for my NSTs – just in case.

I pack separate stuff for Dumpling. Dumpling gets their own bag, full of his or her own stuff. I love that we decided not to find out the sex – it made buying stuff hard. But I feel excitement about just that. I get a baby and then we find out the sex! We have a lot of gender neutral things and we plan on getting a lot more once we know. The bag in the photo above is a diaper bag by House of Flynn. I LOVE THIS BAG.

For Baby:

  • Body suits (also known as onesies) – the hospital has these, but I know some people prefer to bring their own. I decided to go with snap tops, because of the umbilical cord. I love these. They’re the perfect size for a newborn. (June & January)
  • Gloves – babies end up scratching themselves in the face, no matter what. Their nails always seem to be long. I know some tops and long sleeve suits have the little hand covers, but I prefer to bring my own gloves just in case.
  • Booties/socks – Cold toesies, enough said. (June & January)
  • Hat or bow – I’m bringing one of each, so when I found out the sex, I can throw one on. The hat will work both ways though, just in case Dumpling is cold. (TeenieBeeBoutique)
  • Baby Carrier – Some hospitals don’t allow this, so you might want to double check, but I love having a carrier in the hospital with me. We aren’t allowed to roam the halls with the baby, unless they’re in their bassinet – but I was allowed to wear in the hospital room, late at night when babe was supposed to be sleeping. I love ring slings for the newborn phase. (Poppet)
  • Going home outfit – Whatever cute little outfit you want them to go home in! Photos will most likely be taken so I recommend something cute.
  • Burp cloth – They gave us some in the hospital, but I know some people prefer to bring their own.
  • Pacifier – Our local hospital gives out Soothies. If there’s a specific brand you like, I recommend bringing it.
  • Blanket – We have a special blanket that we are taking with us. Semi-custom done by Emmeline Textiles.
  • Car seat – Should be installed in the car at this stage of the game. When the nurse wheels you out, she or he will visibly check to see if it’s installed in your car.

For Mama:

  • Birth Plan – I wrote up a birth plan with Birdie, but after that it was kind of spontaneous with Tot. So I don’t plan on writing one anymore. If this interests you, make sure you have a copy in your bag.
  • Insurance – You should be pre-registered at the hospital, but if not, make sure you have your insurance information.

  • Labor outfit – Something with easy access that you don’t mind getting messy in. I will just use the hospital gown.
  • Bath robe – I used mine after birth, when walking around and when I had visitors. I’m expecting to do the same. You could probably use this while laboring as well.
  • Socks/slippers – The hospital supplies nonslip socks, but I prefer to use my own. (Woven Pear)
  • Comfy clothes – After labor, I hung out in the hospital gown since I was messy and they have to check you and your uterus repeatedly. But once that subsides, comfortable clothes to hang out in the hospital in was all I wanted. I’m packing a night gown, that had buttons up top for easy access for nursing and so I can be checked down below by the nurses.
  • Going home outfit – Something stretchy and comfortable! Your uterus should be approximately the size of your uterus at 18 weeks. Don’t expect to be able to fit in your pre-pregnancy clothes. You’ll probably still look a little pregnant when it’s time to leave.

  • Nursing Pads – I swear by the bamboo ones by Bamboobies. They’re my favorite. I used them with all my kiddos.(Bamboobies)
  • Nipple Cream – The hospital supplied this for me. I needed this badly after all the attempts of breastfeeding at first.
  • Nursing bra – Yes! I already started using my nursing bra. It works well for the ever changing size of my breasts while pregnant and they’re comfortable. I love the Yoga Nursing Brahhh by Bamboobies. (Bamboobies)
  • Disposable undies/pads – The hospital supplies the mesh ones and different size pads. I know a lot of moms love these, but they’re actually my least favorite. They slide around and I think they’re messy. I LOVE Always discreet Boutique – they’re for leaks and they fit well under clothes. It’s not obvious that you’re wearing a giant pad. Plus you get to toss when you make a mess.
  • Abdominal binder – The hospital supplies one for us here, but I LOVE the MamaStrut. These are basically to hold your insides together – since I felt like mine were falling out after delivery. It helps bind your ab muscles back together, kept my hips together, applied pressure to my uterus. The MamaStrut does all of this, has a spot to hold the pad in and also comes with heating/ice pads. (MamaStrut)

These options are for when you’re laboring. Tot was completely spontaneous and I labored at home for a short while, so I didn’t really need any of these. I’m not sure what I’m expecting for Dumpling.

  • Massage lotion
  • Music
  • Magazine/book
  • Pillow
  • Blanket
  • Snack/Beverages

  • Eyeglasses
  • Contacts
  • Contact Solution – If you go in for a c-section, I know they make you take out your contacts. I don’t know from personal experience though.
  • Lip balm – I remember my lips being awfully dry. All I wanted was some lip balm.
  • Shampoo/conditioner – The hospital offers an all in one body wash and shampoo. It dried out my hair so bad.
  • Body wash
  • Lotion
  • Other toiletries – I wanted toothbrush and toothpaste. The hospital gave me some, but I just really wanted my own. Also razor – so I could feel a little bit more like myself after my first shower.
  • Brush
  • Hair tie/headband

Electronics. I know some people prefer no electronics in their room, but I want to make sure that I had a little bit of everything. I lost a lot of photos with my older two, so I want to make sure that I don’t miss any opportunities for photos.

  • Cell phone
  • Phone charger
  • Camera
  • Camera charger
  • Memory card
  • Laptop/tablet
  • Laptop/tablet charger

  • Hey! I’m back from my IG imposed ban 🙄 I missed y’all, haha. I got to test out @weirdslings Fly-lahlah and I wrote a review. It’s up and why is there no fly emoji? There’s a mosquito, bee, spider - but no fly. How funny. ⁣

  • We pulled out our @appleblossomwovens Black Agate Tencel wrap for this chilly weather. It’s been cold and rainy, so the extra coziness of Tencel has been great. ⁣
Black Agate has been one of our favorite monochrome wraps ever. 🖤 It truly speaks to me. I can’t wait for Reflection to be released which is another monochrome wrap, with a kaleidoscope weave. Both white and black weft are speaking to me. M

  • Who is always at the ready to take somebody’s head off during the holidays? 🙋🏽‍♀️ Just look at me wrong or finish my favorite dish and it’s over. ⁣
The social anxiety is real and @socialcbd has really helped during this past holiday week and the upcoming festivities. Thank you #SocialCBD for helping this mama out during the holidays. ⁣

  • Obsessing over @squeezamals this holiday season! The picnic pack was the cutest addition to our Squeezamals collection. Everything came for a perfect picnic lunch. ⁣
Dumpling loves the texture of the squish of the Squeezamals. She is always found with one in her hands. ⁣
If you’re interested in grabbing some for your littles, check out your local @walmart!

  • I volunteered in my daughter’s classroom for Thanksgiving. I helped on the food line so I had to tie Dumpling to my back and make turkey sandwiches. We do teach the kids that we don’t actually celebrate Thanksgiving, and the teachers discussed the truth with the kids. I’m glad I didn’t have to step in like previous years 🤦🏽‍♀️⁣
My tote bag from @shopkindredtogether is my favorite though. I’m able to fit everything in there. A quick link to the shop is in my profile & you can use code APRILOCT to save 💰 ⁣

  • We were so lucky to be able to check out the Flip & Spin for the Win bundle - thanks to @PowerYourFun. The bundle included Laser Launchers (which I can’t pry out of Tot’s hands), the Mini Cyclone Stunt Car, and Turbo Tops Gyro Cars - which you see pictured here. These are our favorite part of the bundle, the kiddos are constantly try to do tricks with them. ⁣
Thank you Kaliber Global Toys for this awesome gift! #sponsored #PowerYourFun #TurboTops @apexdropofficial
  • Yesterday was my birthday! I’m thirty-something (the something is silent 🤪) and it was a good day. A made it back from a 10 day trip just in time to celebrate. The kids were so excited to make mom’s day fun. ⁣⁣
My sister always grabs a red velvet bundt cake for me and I love it. It’s my favorite. My grandmother used to bake me a red velvet cake every year when I was younger and it’s important to me to have it. ⁣
Here’s to another revolution around the sun ☀️
  • I posted about the awesome @pjmasks PJ Masks Seeker about a month ago. I grabbed it at @target and kept it hidden until it was Tot’s birthday. He had already completely forgotten about it & it was a wonderful surprise to open on his day 🎂 He’s been playing with it nonstop and his sisters keep trying to get a turn. ⁣
Thank you to MomSelect for gifting us this toy. It’s the perfect toy for this @pjmasks obsessed family. #ad⁣

  • My middle child. My wild child. He’s officially 5 years old and 1 day. I tried to make sure he had a fun filled day yesterday and now I’m exhausted. This year he decided he didn’t like cake and asked for donuts instead 🍩 ⁣
Happy birthday Tot 💕
